Cruises are one of the easiest vacations to plan. Your room, most of your meals and your entertainment are all in one place, and you wake up somewhere new. If it’s your first time, these tips will help you book with confidence.
1. Start with how many days you have
Short 3 to 5 night cruises are a great way to try cruising without a big commitment. A 7-night cruise gives you more ports and more time to relax.
2. Pick where you want to go
The Caribbean and the Bahamas are popular for first-timers because of warm weather and beaches. Alaska is amazing for scenery. Mexico cruises are a good mix of beaches and culture.
3. Choose your cabin type
- Inside: no window, lowest price. Great if you’ll mostly be out on the ship.
- Ocean view: a window to see the sea.
- Balcony: your own private outdoor space. A favorite for couples.
- Suite: more space and extra perks.
4. Know what’s included and what’s extra
Your cruise fare usually covers your cabin, main dining and lots of onboard activities. Things like drink packages, Wi-Fi, specialty restaurants, shore excursions and gratuities are often extra. Check the details before you book so there are no surprises.
5. Watch for wave season
Many cruise lines run some of their best promotions early in the year, roughly January through March. It’s a great time to look, especially for popular sailings.
6. Check your travel documents early
Document rules depend on your cruise, your ports and your citizenship. Check what your cruise line requires as soon as you book, and remember a passport takes time to get if you don’t have one.
7. Arrive the day before
If you’re flying to your departure port, try to arrive a day early. The ship won’t wait if a flight is delayed.
