All-inclusive resorts are popular for a simple reason: you pay up front, then relax. No checking prices every time you’re hungry or thirsty. But “all-inclusive” doesn’t mean the same thing everywhere, so here’s what to look for.
What’s usually included
- Your room
- Meals at the buffet and often several restaurants
- Drinks, including many alcoholic drinks
- Pools, beach access and daily activities
What can cost extra
Spa treatments, premium drinks, some specialty restaurants, off-site tours and airport transfers are often extra. Every resort is different, so read the inclusions before you book.
How to pick the right resort
- Who’s going? Families should look for kids’ clubs and family suites. Couples may prefer adults-only resorts.
- Beach or pool? If the beach matters to you, check photos and reviews of the actual beach.
- Food variety: more restaurants means more variety, which matters on a longer stay.
- Distance from the airport: a shorter transfer means more vacation time.
Popular places to look
Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and many Caribbean islands all have lots of all-inclusive options at different price points.
